Notes on Frequency in Motion in Barcelona

The expanded cinema/Butoh performance Frequency in Motion in Barcelona was really something special.  For me, it was the first time I ever performed/screened in a convent which dates back to the Middle Ages. A rare opportunity.

The show’s setup itself was also unique. The chapel or convent is divided into three rooms and each room had a different sound set up.

So, throughout the show, Hiroko and I would move to different stations and produce various sounds (objects, bowls) The dancers, Marlène Jöbstl and  Atsushi Takenouchi,  would travel into each room at different times or together as well.
Everything was improvised.

The crowd, which was large,  was not separated at all from the dancers or the musicians, so there was constant interaction. Sadly, I could not see what the dancers were doing. My films were projected in chapel room 1 and 3. There was no screen, only the chapel wall.
The entire show was 64 min non-stop. We were able to get a really good mix of the recording  from the mixing board, so  we may  release this recording soon. We are also now getting some video footage as well.
All in all, a beautiful, magical, audio visual, Butoh journey. Arigatou.

Frequency in Movement in Barcelona on 11/20/23

I am really excited to report,  I will be traveling to Barcelona for Frequencies in Movement in Barcelona.

Frequencies in Movement is a multidisciplinary performance that works with image, sound and butô. The proposal is based on the sounds of objects, field recordings, and music by Hiroko Komiya (JP), and Chris H. Lynn (USA); Lynn’s Super 8 film recordings; and the representation of Butô by Marlène Jöbstl (FR/AT), and Atsushi Takenouchi (JP).
