Framework Radio 6/12/11 will be featuring tracks from The Clouds Have Settled In


Another amazing set from Framework Radio-This week’s program features tracks from The Clouds Have Settled In released on Just Not Normal. I have listened to this program a few times already and it is really special. You can listen on Resonance here on Sunday nite at 10pm (London Time) or the Framework site, which I will post later.

Robert Robertson’s lectures at the BFI

Robert Robertson talks a bit about his lectures here on his blog-I am really moved to be on this list of directors he discussed-I also have his notes on the Dream film below. Robert’s analysis, enthusiasm, and overall knowledge of his subject area is peerless in my humble opinion. I would recommend purchasing his book if you are interested in Eisenstein, cinema, and the act of creation… from Robert Robertson:”

…This concentration on a single element is also characteristic of dreams. You get it in the writing of Edgar Allan Poe. Eisenstein mentions Poe’s startling impression of a giant insect climbing a mountain, which he sees when he looks up out of his window. Then he realises that he is seeing the insect on the window itself. The creature looks enormous in comparison to the mountain in the distance. This confusion of foreground and background is fascinating for Eisenstein, as it’s an interesting example of montage within the shot.
This type of spatial distortion is used in this film by the American filmmaker and sound artist Chris Lynn. It’s an evocation of a famous poem by Edgar Allan Poe: Dream Within a Dream, which has the line: “All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”

But what is happening audiovisually here?
It’s a form of audiovisual counterpoint: the sound is a recording of a public library in Alençon, an echoing space. Alençon is where Baudelaire at last found a publisher for Les fleurs du mal, the Flowers of Evil collection of his poems. And he made Poe’s work known to continental Europe through his translations of it into French.
There’s a similarity in this film by Lynn with Sokurov’s use of sound in that extract we experienced last week, from his Mother and Son. In Lynn’s film the library sounds don’t immediately fit with the images we see (in fact they are thousands of miles apart) so this creates an extra dimension of meaning. It’s a quality that is fundamental in cinema: it lies at the root of editing, and various kinds of montage.
Eisenstein, when he was learning about cinema, attended Kuleshov’s Film Workshop for three months, during the winter of 1922/23. What came to be known as the ‘Kuleshov Effect’ is at the heart of how cinema works. [Kuleshov Effect Washington/Moscow anecdote].
Here Chris Lynn is using an audiovisual Kuleshov Effect, the discrepancies between sound and image force us to try to make a connection between them, and so they create a dreamlike sensation. This confusing quality is analogous to Lynn’s montage within the shot, like Poe, blending the foreground with the background: water on the windowpane and the tree outside, creating spatial distortions in motion.”

A Day Out West featured in 0014 Survey for Classwar Karaoke

Classwar Karaoke is a brilliant netlabel-collective which features sound art, music, field recordings, and short films. They do quarterly surveys and the list of contributors is really staggering. Here is their website which features info on the latest survey. I did a short film for the survey-check it out below and spend some time with the other works.

Kandala Records on Bandcamp

Kandala Records, based in Taiwan, has a really nice Bandcamp page here-You can listen to Afternoon Traces if you like, but there is a number of other discs by very innovative sound artists also available to listen to or download. The new generation of sound artists in Taiwan are creating a unique sound culture which I find very compelling.

Framework Radio

I recorded the intro for this week’s Framework Radio’s program. The program airs on Resonance FM in London at 10 pm on Sunday. This is really a treat! There is also a field recording along with the intro. From the Framework website:
framework began broadcasting in june, 2002 on the newly reformed resonance 104.4fm in london. the show now airs on 5 radio stations around the world, with more to follow soon, and streams and podcasts here on it’s own website. framework is consecrated to field-recording and it’s use in composition, and began broadcasting at a time when a new community of sound artists with a special interest in found sound was developing, a community spread across the world that, thanks to the internet, was no longer limited to a specific geography. framework sees itself as an outlet for this ever-growing and developing community, a folk-tool in a new folk movement, a community driven exchange point for creators and listeners alike.

China stills Shanghai 5-12

Shanghai is dense, overwhelming city for the senses …Since 2008 I have collected quite a number of field recordings and images there. Some of the field recordings have made their way on my discs, but I still have many more to release hopefully. The film/video part is another story. I have two films that deal directly with Shanghai G7034and Suzhou/Shanghai but I have always wanted to do more. At the moment, I have a number of projects that don’t deal directly with the city, but I think that may change soon . Above are images that date back to 2008 and 2009-expect more in the near future.
