Frequency Impressions in Seattle by Himiko

Below is a lovely poem/text by a  Japanese dancer and calligrapher, Himiko, who attended the Frequency in Motion performance in Seattle. I will post my own report soon.

音と映像と舞踏が溶け合う世界。
なんとも不思議なリズムと波。時々、音に合わせて
流れてくる朗読。時に朗読は
意味を
追ってしまうけれど海外で聞く日本語は
一つの波動として
音として
耳にたどりつく。

でも、あらためて
日本語の
音霊の
波動の高さを感じさせられた。

踊りも3人の舞踏家がみごとに
いろんな波の響きを
生み出してくれて
見応えが素晴らしかった。

音と映像と舞踏が、
どれかが飛び出すこともなく
見事に響きあう世界。

とても居心地のよい空間。

いまでも、
まだ余韻が残っています。

素敵な作品でした。

A world where sound, image, and dance melt into one.
Such strange rhythms, such waves.
Now and then, flowing with the music,
comes the voice of narration.
At times the narration
pulls me toward
meaning—
but hearing Japanese from abroad,
it reaches my ears
as vibration,
as sound,
as one wave among waves.
And yet, once again,
I was made to feel
the spiritual resonance of Japanese,
the elevation of its sonic frequencies.
The three dancers, too, were magnificent,
creating such various
reverberations of waves—
the performance was breathtaking.
Sound and image and dance:
none leaping ahead of the others,
but resonating together beautifully.
A space so comfortable to be in.
Even now,
the afterglow remains.
It was a wonderful work.

Frequency in Motion live in Barcelona

I am very happy to announce the release of Frequency live in Barcelona !

Frequency in Motion- is an Audio visual performance with Butoh dance.
Projecting Super 8mm and digital film from the fragments of landscape. Soundscape from live improvised sounds, field recordings, poems and voices. The dancers’ and the performers’ symbolic and suggestive presence, movements and shadows.

Recorded in ‘Frequency in Motion’ live performance at CC Convent De Sant Agusti 25yrs anniversary program in Barcelona, Spain on November 20,2023.

There is quite a bit of unreleased material on this show, which will air on Camp Radio on 12/25/23, so I provided a tracklist with some descriptions below:

    1. Edge of Presence improv rehearsal with Hiroko Komiya in Warsaw (6/19/23) recorded by Atsushi Takenouchi.  Sounds audible: I am writing with a feather pen on a notepad  with contact mics attached . Hiroko is reading her nautical journal, while circling a stone. I adjusted the  EQ for the file later.
    2. Warsaw Morning (future release)  Field recording: Hiroko Komiya. Keyboard:CHL.
    3.  Inside Nanjiing teachers college (slow humid afternoon). This piece was not used in the River Thoughts film.
    4. The effect of exhaustion extract 2. A short piece from Simone Weil’s Factory Journal. Text: Simone Weil Voice: Hu Manrong. I provided the sounds. This track appeared on this site on 2/08/20.

Looking forward to presenting  3 new super 8 films from the  Journal  of  Drifting Hours Series  and selections of my  most recent work-A Season Close to Mountains and Atlantic Views.

I will also lead a workshop  on various methods of audiovisual recording while  in the field. Participants will  also be invited to develop their  own ideas and share their creative process.
