Notes on Slow Viewing Room at Space Theater in Busan, South Korea.

I have been thinking about the Slow Viewing room experience since I returned from Busan.

There was rain

outside the theater

count the frames

black out

on the brink of nothingness

the unknown

sonic transition

dawn

in the grey

the setting, the architecture, the space, the environment.

different worlds and levels of engagement.

current or present, past or lost and distant, not so distant futures.

landscapes of recovery

the pulse of the sun flickering on the screen

circles of light

falling leaves

rings of silence

boats drifting and slipping away

exterior sounds making their way into the space

performer and spectator

absorbing travel

art creating in a world of commerce

Industry embedded within the structure

stillness and reading

methods of repair

contemplation

past visions

collaborative effort with the viewer

the performer

elements of sound

the image

the space as performer

leaving and returning

mountain path

eyes looking out

Deep thanks to Jun Sangbae for his artistic vision and ideas and Hwang Miae for her stunning performance..

Notes on Frequency at Space Theater in Busan, South Korea

A brilliant show which started in the mid-afternoon on a Saturday inside a busy metro station.
Frequency in Busan was truly underground. Another first for me.

Like past shows, we introduced quite a few new elements during the set. I opened the performance with an electric piano with Hiroko’s sounds. During the quieter moments, you could hear some rumbling from the metro trains, which a few audience members noted during the q and a session after the show. This sound was oddly similar to the Tanami theater show in Japan nearly a year earlier.

The pace changed at times, there was a moment of just percussive sounds: shells, water, pages turning, that was really magical. There was more voice/poetry as well.

This Frequency really had us  contemplating the performance  space in a different way. Art in the center of commerce/travel/ with aspects of the urban environment  incorporated into the live show. The distant sounds of  approaching trains/white noise/the shuffling foot traffic.

I will expand on this for the Slow Viewing Room soon.

Beautiful digital projection and sound in the theatre with a  transformative, enchanting performance by the dancers  Atsushi Takenouchi, Hwang Miae, Heo Gyeongmi

After Frequency, we had some really thought provoking questions about Butoh, the environment, space, the cinematic image and its relation to thought,  and improvisation. A very enthusiastic  and thoughtful audience.

The event could not have happened without the incredible vision of Artistic Director Jun Sangbae.

Deep thanks Space Theater and everyone involved.

I will share live sounds/rehearsals in the upcoming weeks and possibly more pics.
