Frequency in Motion in Kumano, Japan

Frequency in Motion at the Tanami theater was really a dream show for me. The atmosphere, the setting, the remote location really added to the mystery of this frequency. We rehearsed for a few days, but the final version was still relatively new. All improvised, this set was less dramatic than others, but the intensity remained. All the past frequencies were in major cities, but Kumano is remote, near the sea and mountains. I am certain this contributed to the mood and tempo of the dancers and the sounds. I was lucky to have a real piano during the set and I incorporated some new tracks as well. I really enjoyed improvising with Awaya and Hiroko and look forward to sharing some of the material. After the show, we had a very illuminating Q and A session. The questions varied from the nature of improvisation, Butoh culture, the structure of the film, and pacing. We had a great audience!

Massive thanks to the dancers: Atsushi Takenouchi (JP), Ioku Ero Nikaido (Hong Kong), Himeko Narumi (JP), Arisa Hiura (JP) for adding to the Japanese dream.

I have lots of additional work I will be sharing about this show and will report on my screening and filming in future posts.

Deep thanks to everyone involved in participating and putting this show on.  A fantastic event!

Frequency at Revma in Athens, Greece

Frequency in Motion made its way to Revma in Athens, Greece on a cold February night. This was a beautiful and intense performance with a very large, receptive crowd. Each show is different and this one was no exception. There were four dancers, and an additional guitarist. Sounds, images, dancers, and two small installations provided quite a challenge during rehearsals, but we managed and it really paid off. Similar to Mexico, we had two projectors in dialogue, while the dancers moved from one space to another, each with their own story. Many of our sounds were new, and I was able to play an electric piano occasionally. Before the show, we had a Tale of Two Bays playing while the dancers slowly set the tone. This was a beautiful moment because I could really feel the sounds in a physical way and see what Atsushi, Emilia, Vicky, and Neli were creating while the audience wandered in. Like all the other shows, we have plenty of pics, some videos and a recording of the performance. Another very special collaboration. After the event, lots of discussion and ideas. Here is one text, Neli received the next day:

What we saw on Monday evening on the first floor of 8 Servion was
an addictive vortex with centripetal force
Dionysus and Susanoo
an antipodal connection of the post-human
a silent question to Aeschylus
a contemplation on the slowness of movement
a silent scream in the infinitive of time
a collective transition to the unmapped

Thank you Athens, Revma and Butoh dancers-performers : Atsushi Takenouchi, Emilia Bouriti, Vicky Filipa, Neli Poulopoulou and Guitarist: Aleksandros Mitros and Hiroko 🙂

New Antibes release!

Antibes (24) is the third collection of improvised piano pieces recorded in the south of France on an old out-of-tune piano during the months of July and August 2024.
There are a few minor embellishments here and there, but for the most part, this is an accurate document of those summer hours.
Once again, it was lovely to return to this magical place and record during the afternoon and evening.

Mastered in Silver Spring, MD in September-October, 2024
